Noah Lyles has been in talks with Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track League but he has a few conditions before signing with them as a professional athlete.
In an interview on the Night Cap show, the three-time world 200m champion wants Johnson and his team to ensure there is a watching platform, like a TV provider.
The triple world champion noted that since the league was launched, he has been having conversations with the four-time Olympic champion to get all the information needed before making the bold decision.
The Jamaican 800m runner is the latest to sign up for the lucrative women’s-only athletics event that is sponsored by tennis legend Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian.
The reigning Olympic 100m champion explained that he does not want to get invested in something that track and field fans will not get access to.
“We’ve been in talks since the day I heard about it. Trying to get as much information. Trying to get as much of a feel for what’s going on. There’s a lot that I like that he’s doing. There’s a few things that I think could be a little better,” Lyles said.
“The thing that’s stopping me at the heart of it is I have yet to hear of a TV provider. Again, what good is it if we’re producing these great times, great shows, these great rivalries and we have nobody seeing it? Now we’re in the same problem we’re in with the Diamond Leagues and World Championships. I need to hear a TV provider and I need to know that it’s going to be seen consistently.”
A track athlete was raided by anti-doping officials at the Olympic village days before securing a bronze medal in the 800m event.
The Grand Slam Track league has since only announced two-time Olympic champion and 400m hurdles world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and reigning 1500m World champion and Olympic silver medalist Josh Kerr as their first professional signings. As per their first release, Johnson and his team announced intentions to sign 48 athletes as Racers.
