Kenya Sevens face a major test this weekend when they begin their campaign, taking on two formidable opponents in their group as they bid for more points on the board.

Shujaa head into the third leg of the World Sevens Series sitting in ninth position on the 12-team log on 11 points and must rise to the occasion in to move higher up the table as they will need to be in the top eight at the end of the season to be safe.

What do Shujaa need?

While it is still early with four legs yet to be played, Shujaa have not been very impressive in their opening two rounds in Dubai and Cape Town when they collected three and then eight points respectively and they have Great Britain and Australia just above them on 12 points.

It means have to up their game and claim at least another eight to 10 points to stay close to the seventh and eighth-placed teams while more will get them even in a better position.

Who will Kenya face in Group C?

However, their task is made more difficult by the fact that they are in a Pool C that consists Fiji, the series leaders and New Zealand, placed sixth, while Uruguay appear to be the lesser opposition in the group.

Perennial winners Fiji already have 36 points from just two legs, while New Zealand are in an unfamiliar sixth position on 24 points and will be itching to get higher up, meaning Shujaa have their work cut out.

Meanwhile, Uruguay, who know Kenya very well, having contested the promotion slot together last year, are 10th on six points and desperate for a change in fortunes.

Time & where to watch

Kenya begin their campaign at 6.00am (East African time) on Friday against New Zealand, a major test for Wambua’s men, before Fiji come calling at 10.59am, adding to their troubles.

Those two energy-sapping matches will determine the fate of Shujaa in Pool C as a good impression will leave them in contention for a Cup quarter-final place while heavy defeats will spell doom ahead of their final group match against Uruguay at 7.00am on Saturday.

The matches will be live on SuperSport TV.

Kenya Sevens team news
