Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is mourning the death of his mother just two months after losing his father.
While the world was celebrating the new year, Nwabali received the heartbreaking news after being informed that his mother was no more on Wednesday.
The goalkeeper, who plays for South African club Chippa United, has been left devastated as he was still coming to terms with the death of his father, which occurred in November.

“A very, very crazy world indeed,” Nwabali posted on X before adding: “RIP mom, worst year of my life already.”
Nwabali lost his father during the November international break but played for his country against Benin in the 1-1 draw in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier before being given permission to attend his burial when the Super Eagles faced Rwanda, a match the West Africans lost 2-1.
The goalkeeper has been among Chippa’s standout players this season after the club handed him a new contract and made him captain, having fended off interest from a number South African teams, owing to his outstanding performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nwabali came to prominence during AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast early last year following his great display in goal as Nigeria reached the final before losing 2-1 to the hosts.
His calmness, agility and ball-playing abilities were a joy to watch and what endeared him more to fans was the fact that he was playing in what is considered a ‘small’ club in South Africa, having been selected ahead of Nigeria’s European-based goalkeepers such as Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho.
