Cabinet Secretary for Sports Kipchumba Murkomen has defended his stand on monetizing sports in the country as he roots for the privatization sector.

Earlier this week the CS appeared in Parliament to provide clarity on a number of issues in his docket, during which he highlighted that privatisation was the way to go.

Speaking at the unveiling of the CAC Road Cycling African Championship, Murkomen reiterated his stand saying the country can not continue having Sports as a social function supported by government.

«If we look at s ports as just a social function, we will not be able to unlock the economic and employment benefits that come with sports. Sports must be seen as business and development of trade like any other sector,» said Murkomen.

The statement comes on the back of the CS calling for Kenyan Premier League giants like and to tap into commercializing football through owning stadia of their own.

Murkomen called on the private sector to take on the mandate of sponsoring sporting events.

«In coming events we should not be having the government being here. It should be sponsors. It should only be left to the government of Kenya to sponsor its athletes that are participating in the event,» added Murkomen
