The Sports Ministry is on the spot following revelations that it spent nearly Ksh3 billion on consultancy services and feasibility studies for stadia and sports academies.

According to documents tabled before Parliament by Sports PS Peter Tum show that the ministry spent Ksh1 billion on consultancy services for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Besides that, Sh352 million was spent on regional consultancy services while Ksh1.5 billion was splashed on design feasibility studies and topographical surveys ahead of construction of constituency sports academies.

Kenya will co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) slated for February 2025 and Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen has insisted stadia renovation will end next month.

Further, another Ksh1.3 billion was spent on phase one of the Kenya Academy of Sports complex at Kasarani with Ksh424 million going to phase 1B, that is completing a Kenya Academy of Sports hostel.

However, even with the huge outlay, nothing much is on the ground to show where the money, went, raising further questions over the expenditure.

“The ministry has terminated the contracts of some of the consultant firms in the new arrangements,” said Tum, who revealed that the ministry hired consultants from the University of Nairobi, adding that it is reviewing its engagement with some of the consultants.

The documents also revealed that Ksh3.1 billion was spent to renovate Kasarani Stadium, one of the venues earmarked for the 2027 AFCON tournament, whose completion has been scheduled for November.

Tum was appearing before the National Assembly Sports and Culture Committee to update MPs on the status of 22 projects that are in various stages of completion from the 2023-24 financial year.

Kenya is in a race against time to be ready for AFCON 2027 with stadia its main challenge and besides Kasarani, the country is also constructing a new stadium, the Talanta City Sports Complex, that will be used for the tournament.

The president visited the Talanta Sports City construction site on Tuesday afternoon and has provided positive update over its progress.
