Kenya U20, popularly known as Rising Stars, have turned their attention to their next match against Rwanda on October 10, after triumphing 2-1 over hosts Tanzania in their Group A opener at AFCON U-20 CECAFA qualifiers on Sunday.

Kenya are currently second in the five-team pool after Sudan silenced Djibouti 3-1 to take charge of the ‘group of death’.

The Salim Babu-coached side will be aiming to maintain their winning momentum and secure a top spot in Group A at the KMC Stadium. Kenya’s campaign got off to a flying start in Tanzania with a hard-fought 2-1 victory, showcasing their resilience and determination as the team secured their first three points of the competition.

The breakthrough came early in the 23rd minute when Kevin Wanganya unleashed a superb freekick from just outside the box. The well-placed strike sailed past Tanzania’s goalkeeper, giving Kenya a well-deserved lead.

This moment of brilliance boosted the team’s confidence, but despite continued pressure, Kenya went into halftime with only a one-goal advantage. The second half saw Kenya extend their lead. In the 67th minute, Andres Odhiambo delivered a stunning long-range shot that doubled the Rising Stars’ advantage, making it 2-0.

However, Tanzania quickly responded in the 76th minute when Rahim Mkinyange found the back of the net, reducing the deficit to 2-1. Despite late pressure from Tanzania, Kenya’s defence remained solid, and they held on to claim a vital win.

The U20 Africa Cup of Nations will serve as a qualifier for the FIFA U20 2025 World Cup.
