Paul Were is among Kenyan players who excited fans in the Kenyan Premier League and in Harambee Stars colours.

A flying left-footed winger, known for his pace and trickery, Were, popularly known as Maldez, played for some of Kenya’s top clubs with notable successful stints at Tusker FC, AFC Leopards and later Mathare United, as well as spells in Europe and South Africa.

Paul Were honed his skills at the famous Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) known to have produced many of Kenya’s top footballers past and present.

He would play for Mathare Youth before he left to join Tusker FC in 2010. At Tusker, Paul Were made a name for himself, dazzling with his pace down the wings.

Loved for his ability to take on players and show some tricks and flicks, the diminutive winger became a fan-favourite and was a mainstay in the team as Tusker went on to win the 2011 Kenyan Premier League title under then coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo.

Paul Were left Tusker in June 2012 to join local rivals AFC Leopards and he made an instant impact when he was named man of the match on his Ingwe debut, having assisted Allan Wanga to score in their 1-0 win over Sofapaka.

Were was part of the AFC Leopards team that won the 2013 GOtv Shield, now FKF Cup, a year after lifting the President’s Cup, and in February 2014, he attracted interest from South Africa.

It was later revealed that South African club Bidvest Wits had invited Paul Were for trials and after five days, he returned home to rejoin Ingwe for the rest of the season.

However, in July 2024, South African club AmaZulu came in for the pacy winger and signed him, handing him a three-year contract, but he lasted just a season as his deal was terminated in June 2015 after the club suffered relegation.

After his short stint in South Africa, Paul Were began a five-year adventure in Europe, most of which was spent in Greece.

Between 2015 and 2020, the now 31-year-old played in Greece for AEL Kalloni, Acharnaikos, PS Kalamata, AO Trikala, AO Egaleo, and AO Diavolitsiou. There was a brief stint in Kazakhstan with Kaisar from 2018-2019.
