Murang’a Seal captain Joe Waithera has his sights firmly set on the league title after his team fought their way to a 2-2 draw against Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia.

The dramatic encounter, marred by chaotic scenes, has only intensified Waithera’s belief that Murang’a Seal has what it takes to challenge the country’s elite.

The game began with Gor Mahia’s Shariff Musa taking matters into his own hands, embarking on a brilliant solo run into the box in the 16th minute to slot past Murang’a goalkeeper Morgan Ambuka.

There were a few cases of hooliganism last weekend after Gor Mahia drew with Murang'a Seal and AFC Leopards were humbled by Ulinzi Stars, with a section of fans attacking coaches at full time.

Just minutes later, Gor Mahia doubled their lead. Musa Masika rose above the crowd to send a powerful header into the top-right corner from a well-placed free-kick, leaving Murang’a trailing 2-0 before halftime.

Murang’a, however, refused to back down. The second half saw Waithera pounce on a loose ball in the 51st minute after Gor’s keeper Gad Matthews mishandled a shot. Seizing the opportunity, Waithera calmly found the net, reigniting hope for Murang’a.

Then, in a stunning last-minute twist, Elly Saenyi’s cross in the 91st minute forced another error from Matthews, who ended up palming the ball into his own goal, securing Murang’a Seal’s hard-earned point.

With this result, Murang’a Seal now sits ninth in the league, trailing the leaders KCB by 8 points. It’s a promising position for the club, especially after their recent win against another top team, AFC Leopards, whom they narrowly edged 1-0 at their home ground, Saint Sebastian Park.

Chaos erupted at the Machakos Stadium after Elly Saenyi's stoppage time Equalizer restored parity in stoppage time during Gor Mahia's clash against Murang'a Seal.

For Waithera, these back-to-back performances against the country’s football giants are evidence of Murang’a’s potential to become title contenders. Reflecting on the club’s trajectory, he said, “We are working hard to get to Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards’ level, and we’re getting there.”

Having been promoted just last season, Murang’a Seal is steadily climbing the ranks with a focus on consistency and resilience. “We respect both clubs but want to reach their level,” Waithera continued. “It’s a step-by-step process, but we’re on our way.”

Waithera’s confidence in Murang’a’s championship aspirations is unwavering. “We want to win the league. Every team comes fighting for the championship, and we’re doing the same. We put God first and are taking it game by game. We’re not focused on other teams; we’re focusing on ourselves,” he emphasized.

Unfazed by the reputation of established teams, Waithera is clear about Murang’a’s fearless approach: “We’re not scared of any team. If it’s Gor Mahia, we’ll push just as we do against any other team.”

With the season underway, Murang’a Seal’s determination and fighting spirit could be exactly what they need to challenge the established order and make their mark in Kenyan football.
