Harambee Stars and Richards Bay goalkeeper Ian Otieno has shared insights into his bond with Kenya’s national team captain Michael Olunga.

The 30-year-old Olunga, who has been in sensational form for Al-Duhail in the Qatar Stars League, is reportedly on the radar of Amakhosi, fueling excitement among South African football fans.

After a disappointing AFCON qualification campaign, a Harambee Stars legend criticized coach Engin Firat’s tactics calling for structural reforms and grassroots investment in Kenyan football.

However, Otieno has shed light on the speculation, hinting at the challenges and possibilities of such a move.

“About Michael, he’s the captain of the national team; we speak a lot, actually,” Otieno revealed in an interview with

“I heard of the rumours that he was supposed to come to Kaizer Chiefs, I don’t know. But I don’t know because the Arab money is something else, you know. You might never know what is happening back there.”

Disappointment as Harambee Stars failed to secure a vital win against Zimbabwe ending their hopes of Africa Cup of Nations qualification.

Otieno, who recently joined Richards Bay FC after a successful stint with Zambian side Zesco United, expressed his admiration for the PSL and his desire to see Olunga test himself in the South African league someday.

The goalkeeper’s move to the PSL has opened new doors for Kenyan players and he believes Olunga could thrive in the competitive environment.

“Yeah, but in future, if he’d like to come, I can invite him to come over because the PSL is such a good league,” Otieno added.

Olunga’s credentials speak volumes as the Harambee Stars skipper has established himself as one of the most lethal strikers in the Middle East.

South Africans have expressed dismay at the behaviour of Zimbabwe fans who poured onto the pitch in Polokwane to celebrate wildly following their team’s draw against Harambee Stars.

His current form in the Qatar Stars League underscores his value, with eight goals and two assists to his name this season, making him the joint-top scorer.

Last month, Olunga’s stellar performances earned him the coveted Player of the Month award, after netting three goals and assisting one in October.

The striker’s contributions have propelled Al-Duhail to the summit of the league standings, with the team amassing 22 points from nine matches.

His influence extends beyond his scoring ability, as he continues to inspire teammates and fans alike with his commanding presence on the pitch.

Engin Firat has urged frustrated critics to 'stop dreaming' after Harambee Stars were bundled out of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers following a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Polokwane.

The possibility of Olunga making a switch to Kaizer Chiefs has stirred discussions, with fans speculating on the impact he could have in the PSL.

For Otieno, the idea of having a compatriot and friend join him in South Africa is more than just professional—it is personal.

“He’s a big player and an incredible leader. Having him in the PSL would not only elevate the league but also inspire many young Kenyan players.»
