Kenyan winger Paul Were has embarked on a new chapter in his football career after signing a one-year deal with Greek fourth-tier club A.E. Lefkimmi FC.
The 30-year-old, who last played for Mathare United in the National Super League (NSL) during the 2023-2024 season, had been a free agent before sealing his move to Greece.
According to, Were’s contract will keep him at Lefkimmi until June 30, 2025, where he is set to compete in the FCA Winner’s Championship.
The club made the announcement official on Tuesday, confirming that the final obstacle regarding Were’s residence permit had been resolved.
«The bureaucratic problem with the residence permit has been overcome, and Paul Were is sending a message to all our team friends from Sharjah airport in the United Arab Emirates. He is looking forward to seeing them in person,” the club posted.
In a video shared by the club, Were expressed his excitement for the new journey ahead, stating: «Hi Lefkimmi fans, can’t wait to see you soon.»
This transfer marks the seventh time Were will feature for a Greek club, having previously played for AEL Kalloni, Acharnaikos, PS Kalamata, AO Trikala, AO Egaleo, and AO Diavolitsiou.

Lefkimmi also recognized his extensive experience in Greek football, posting, "The former ace of Kalloni, Kalamata, and Aegaleo will soon compete in the red and white of our AELara."
Founded in 1951 as A.P.O. Lefkimmi before its renaming to Athletic Union of Lefkimmi (AEL), the club plays its home games at the Dimotiko Stadio Lefkimmis, a stadium with a capacity of between 2,000 and 3,000 fans.
Were’s move to Lefkimmi represents a fresh opportunity to continue his football journey in a country he knows well, and he will be keen to make an impact in the Greek lower leagues.

Were started his career at Mathare United and Tusker before moving to AFC Leopards in 2013, after which he was able to seal a move to South African side Royal Amazulu, before commencing on a three-year stint in Greece for three different clubs.
He briefly returned to AFC Leopards, before returning to ply his trade for two more Greek clubs on one-year contracts. He also played in Rwanda before returning to Mathare United earlier this year, where he helped the Slamboys win back promotion to the top flight of Kenyan football.
