The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has appointed immediate former Nairobi City Stars CEO Patrick Korir as the new Chief Executive Officer, following the resignation of Barry Otieno.
Otieno handed in his resignation at the weekend, before his exit was confirmed on Tuesday, and the federation has installed ex-journalist Korir on an interim basis.
“Barry has decided to step down after years of dedicated service to Kenyan football. The Federation expresses its sincere gratitude for his contributions and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors,” read a statement from FKF.
Barry Otieno has finally confirmed his decision to step down as FKF CEO after five years amid wisespread reports that he is keen on the presidential seat.
“Barry will work closely with the FKF team to ensure a smooth and seamless transition of leadership, guaranteeing that ongoing projects and key activities continue without interruption during this period of change.”
Korir has been serving as CEO of City Stars, leading the club back to the FKF Premier League in 2020 as well ensuring they maintained their top flight status, and will now be tasked with leading the federation, albeit on an interim basis.
“Patrick brings a wealth of experience in Kenyan football, having served as a journalist, football coordinator, and, most recently, as the CEO of Nairobi City Stars,” the FKF statement further read.
Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa remains adamant that he will defend his seat despite questions over his eligibility.
“His in depth understanding of the sport, combined with his management expertise, ensures he will quickly integrate into his new role, minimising any disruption to FKF’s operations.
“The FKF remains committed to its mission of growing football at all levels and assures stakeholders that all scheduled activities and programs will proceed as planned. We believe that Patrick Korir will play a pivotal role in this transition and help steer the Federation toward even greater success.”
Barry Otieno was appointed CEO in 2019 to replace Robert Muthomi, having previously served in different capacities, and has been rumoured to be eyeing the FKF top seat in the December 7 elections.
Otieno has stepped down from his role after five years in the job.
