Former striker Bonface Ambani has laid out his ambitious plan to restore the club to its former glory should he be elected chairman in the upcoming club elections scheduled for June.
The former Kenyan international, who also played for Tanzanian powerhouse declared his candidacy last December, expressing confidence in his ability to end the club’s 26-year league title drought.
Under the leadership of the current chairman Dan Shikanda AFC Leopards have struggled to challenge their arch-rivals Gor Mahia, who hold a record 21 league titles. Ambani has vowed to implement concrete strategies and structures to propel the club back to dominance.

revolves around three key elements: transparency and accountability, quality recruitment, and depoliticizing the club’s operations.
“AFC Leopards is a massive club with a rich history and millions of followers. It is the most followed club in Kenya, ahead of Gor Mahia and Shabana. What we need to do is straightforward – transparency and accountability must be at the core,” Ambani shared on the channel.
Ambani stressed the importance of financial transparency to build trust among fans and stakeholders.
“If we collect gate revenues of one million, two million, or even four million shillings, we must clearly show how it is utilised. That will build trust.”
He also highlighted timely salary payments for players and a professional approach when parting ways with them.
“If we need to release a player, we will sit down and discuss the terms professionally, ensuring mutual respect.”

Ambani, who previously served as technical director at Mara Sugar, who he guided from Division One all the way to the FKF Premier League, believes that getting the right players is crucial for success.
“We need to prioritise quality recruitment and ensure that we have the right talent to compete at the highest level.”

Ambani called for an end to political wrangling within the club, insisting that AFC Leopards should be run as a professional football club, not a political entity.
“Football is about three things: respecting the fans, the players, and the members. Without these, we have no club.”

Ambani’s vision for AFC Leopards’ infrustructural development
Ambani also highlighted his plan to secure a training facility for AFC Leopards
“The club does not even have a training facility. Some people argue that running AFC requires millions, but I believe it requires great ideas.”
His plan involves utilizing the club’s 90 branches to collectively secure a 20-acre piece of land on the outskirts of Nairobi to establish a state-of-the-art training complex.
“With proper facilities, we can build hostels, gyms, swimming pools, and more. This is a sports club, and we should expand to include other sports like volleyball, hockey, and tennis.”
Ambani also promised to overhaul AFC Leopards’ merchandising operations, making it easier and more affordable for fans to purchase official club gear while ensuring revenue benefits the team directly.
“I have won trophies at various levels, including Division Two and NSL with Mara Sugar and Division One with Nakuru Bucks. I also won silverware as a player with Gor Mahia and many more. I know what it takes to build a winning team.”
As the June elections approach, Ambani’s campaign is built on a strong foundation of structural and financial reforms aimed at restoring AFC Leopards’ dominance. Whether his vision aligns with the club’s members and fans will be determined at the ballot box.
