AFC Leopards have revealed the reasons the club was denied access to Nyayo Stadium for the Mashemeji Derby.

Leopards had sought to host bitter rivals Gor Mahia at the Nyayo Stadium on March 2 and with anticipation building, the match was cancelled two days to kick off, after Ingwe failed to secure the match venue.

The reason given was that the stadium is as Kenya prepares to host the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) but two weeks later, Nyayo is set to host its

Junior Starlets will take on Uganda in the second leg of the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier at Nyayo on Sunday March 16 while Harambee Stars will host Gabon at the same venue on March 23 in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Newly appointed Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy took charge of his first training session ahead of crucial 2026 world cup qualifiers fixtures.

AFC Leopards secretary general Gilbert Andugu has opened up on before they were denied access to Nyayo.

“At first, they gave us Kasarani and we even advertised the venue but then they brought workers on sight,” Andugu told

“Then we moved to Nyayo and we thought they could grant us access. However, they told us that the stadium is not ready and has no floodlights.

“We wondered since the match was to be played at 3.30pm. They told us they did not want fans to take photos of the stadium which would have gone out there and project an image that Kenya is not ready to host CHAN.”

Benni McCarthy names a 32-man Harambee Stars squad for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon, blending experience and youth.

Andugu is surprised that Nyayo is now available to national teams, just days after they were denied access, although he remains optimistic that they will finally return to the stadium, which is traditionally their home ground.

“We are not serious with sports in Kenya. The derby match was to be played at 3pm but they gave lack of floodlights as the reason,” added Andugu.

“But Junior Starlets will be playing there this weekend and Harambee Stars will also be hosting Gabon at the same stadium next week.

“We, however, hope to have the derby there in April and both matches will be played a few days apart.”

Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou has been urged to make a ruthless decision on Harambee Stars prospect Djed Spence ahead of their Europa Legaue clash against AZ Alkmaar.

Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums are the two venues earmarked for CHAN 2024 which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania in August.
