has recounted his 100m race at the 2012 Lausanne Diamond League Meeting where he threatened Usain Bolt’s world record.
The two-time Olympic champion clocked a stunning 9.69 seconds to claim top honours in the race, the second-fastest time in the world, tying with time that he ran at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix, on September 20, 2009.
world record stands at 9.58 seconds, a time he ran at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany. Yohan Blake hinted that he could have gone faster in that race, pointing out that on the day of the race, he was feeling unwell and had to take it easy on himself.
Athletics fans have slammed World Athletics after double Olympics champion Beatrice Chebet was snubbed for the World Athlete of the Year despite having a better season than some finalists.
“I definitely feel like I was moving, on the day of the race we ate fish because fish makes you fast. I didn’t live into it…I just did and I took up a lot of fish before the race and I wasn’t feeling well on the day and probably that was a good thing man because my coach said I was going to run fast,” Yohan Blake told Sports Max TV.
“So, I said, ‘Okay fine, so I just go with that.’ Lausanne at the time was very chilly and I just told myself to calm down and just get up properly and go through the phases and I would feel okay.”
Going into the race, revealed that he had to take things easy, according to his coach, . The two-time world champion noted that getting out of the blocks, he did not know he managed to just keep going.
He crossed the finish line first ahead of and Ryan Bailey who finished second and third in respective times of 9.95 seconds and 10.00 seconds. In that race, Tyson Gay was banned for anabolic steroids and therefore his results from the race were disqualified.
“The coach had told me not to try to get out of the blocks and give out my everything. I got out of the blocks first and I kept going, I didn’t know if it was the fish but I kept moving. I wanted to execute what I had done in training and my coach knew that,” Yohan Blake said.
