Wisley Kipkemoi and Gladys Koech claimed top honours at the Chemususu Dam Half marathon held morning in Ravine, Baringo County on Saturday with Cabinet Secretaries also gracing the event.

Kipkemoi won the men’s title after clocking 63:82 ahead of Emmanuel Bett (63:86) and James Kipkurui 63:87, who finished in second and third positions respectively.

Meanwhile, Koech won the women’s race in a time of 77:00 after edging out Joyline Cherotich (79:21) and Caroline Chepkemoi (84:26) who completed the podium.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen was one of the high-profile government officials that took part in the race, following on his participation in 2023 with his Cabinet colleagues Davis Chirchir (Roads and Transport) and Opiyo Wandayi (Energy) also joining him.

«Marathons are great rallying points for promoting healthy living and worthy causes, such as peaceful coexistence and environmental conservation, besides being arenas for professional athletes to advance their careers,» Murkomen posted on X.

The CS has assured that the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya won't suffer from financial difficulties in their fight against the doping menace following drastic budget cut.

«Participated earlier today, alongside Cabinet colleagues @davis_chirchir (Roads and Transport) and @OpiyoWandayi (Energy) in the 9th edition of the Chemususu Dam Half Marathon,» he added.

The Rift Valley is a home to many renowned world beaters like Eliud Kipchoge, the greatest marathoner of all-time, three-time Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet, double Paris Olympics gold medalist in 5000m and 10000m.

Reports emerged last weekend that CAF had disapproved the grass at Moi Stadium Kasarani, citing concerns over its quality and suitability.

On the importance of the dam, Murkomen said:  :The race raises awareness of critical environmental challenges while funding impactful projects, including building a running track and new classrooms at Chemususu Primary School. The marathon also plants 20,000 trees annually, contributing significantly to his H.E the President’s 15 billion-tree campaign.»
