Olympic champion Masai has shared her journey of resilience and determination leading up to her remarkable triumph at the Paris , where she claimed her first Olympic gold in the 100m hurdles

The 2024 season, her debut as a professional athlete, was fraught with challenges that made her victory even sweeter

Russell edged out Puerto Rican star Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and France’s Cyréna Samba-Mayela to take the top spot on the podium. Reflecting on the experience in an interview on American news outlet she described it as transformative

Masai Russell is motivated to win more gold medals in her specialty and the Paris glory is a source of her inspiration.

“The experience was life-changing. It was like a dream come true. Paris was amazing, the people, the food, everything. Winning there made it my favorite place in the world. Watching myself on the podium still doesn’t feel real. When I see the race replay, it’s like, ‘Dang girl, you did your thing.’ Competing puts me in a different mode, and seeing it afterward is surreal.”

Despite her jubilant success, Russell’s path to the top was anything but smooth. The year began with significant struggles, including the absence of a sponsorship deal, an unexpected hurdle for an athlete of her caliber

“This was the hardest year of my life,” Russell admitted. “At the beginning of the season, I didn’t have a sponsor. I was supposed to get one, but it fell through, and that threw me off mentally. Being big on social media, people would constantly ask, ‘Why aren’t you sponsored?’ My mindset wasn’t locked in on competing, it was on what people thought of me.”

“I always preached positivity and hard work, but now I had to live those values. I had to find strength and faith to overcome the odds stacked against me. It was like flipping a light switch, I became a completely different person by the end of the season,» she said, admitting that it tested her will and faith

Russell’s gold medal in Paris marked not only the pinnacle of her athletic career but also a testament to her unyielding spirit

Masai Russell has broken amazing news to her fans following her huge milestone off the track.

“Winning was another story altogether. It was a dream come true. To overcome all of that and stand on the podium, it’s indescribable. Paris and the Olympics were amazing, but that moment made it unforgettable.”

As she reflects on her journey, looks to build on her Olympic triumph in the upcoming 2025 season where she is already signed to Michael Johnson’s inaugural Grand Slam Track
