Jamaican sprint legend Usain has shared insights into the unique mental approach that gave him an edge on the track

As the holder of eight Olympic gold medals, numerous world titles, and world records in both the 100m and 200m sprints, Bolt credits his dominance to a simple but effective mental practice

In a recent interview on the , Bolt explained how he intentionally distracted himself from overthinking before races to maintain his composure

Usain Bolt who currently holds the world record for the fastest 100m time set his first world record in the event in 2008 with American sprinter Tyson Gay playing a part in his motivation.

“When I get to the start line, I try to think about everything except racing. I figure out things like if I’m going to go out the night before or have a nice dinner,» he said before revealing the reasoning behind his unique approach

This helps distract me from the race itself. The moment you start overthinking the race, you get nervous, and then you start reminding yourself of too many things. It confuses you, and that’s how mistakes happen.”

Bolt’s ability to keep calm under pressure was a hallmark of his career. When asked about what he would visualize or think about as a distraction, Bolt added a touch of humor

“It all depends. If it’s a championship, I think about something big, you know what I mean? Like getting some steak, something nice, maybe some champagne. But if it was just a small friendly, some nuggets would do.”

This light-hearted but calculated approach to pre-race preparation underscores Bolt’s unique mindset

While Bolt himself doesn't subscribe to any superstitions, the world's fastest man admits one pre-race ritual he did that was oblivious to him until the twilight of his career.

His ability to stay relaxed while competing at the highest levels of athletics helped him rise above the intense pressure of championship races and set a standard of excellence in sprinting

Bolt’s legacy as one of the greatest athletes in history continues to inspire not only sprinters but athletes across all sports
