Olympics 100m champion Noah Lyles has revealed why he decided to compete with YouTube streamer IShowSpeed in a 50m race against his coach’s advice.
took on Speed in the 50m dash last month with the contest appearing to be close before he eventually won but according to him, his coach wanted an 100m race instead.
The multiple world champion says his coach had wanted him to put the big-talkingin his place but he decided against it to put on a show for the fans, adding that it was for the same reason that he slowed down to make it look like a close race, when it was actually not.
Olympics 100m champion Noah Lyles has faced backlash after slamming Team USA for their handling of his COVID-19 controversy.
«I threw my arms around and because again if I finish the race by beating him so bad nobody is going to want to see a rematch,» Noah said in the podcast alongside fellow Olympics champions Rai Benjamin and Grant Holloway, on his decision to slow down the race.
«I know people don’t want to see a blowout. I got coach in the back like you need to make sure it’s 100m and you need to put this man in the dirt. But in my head, I’m like that’s not entertaining coach,” he added.
“People are gonna see that and be like oh well that’s all right. But if I make it 50, I can make it close enough to where I don’t have to try as hard but I can still make it close.”
Following the race, Speed has maintained that he actually beat Lyles after the sprinter claimed he was going at a 20 percent speed during the race, claims that the YouTuber disputed, saying he would not have put on a serious face if that was the case.
Responding to that Lyles said: «Then guess what, he put it a few frames more and I look at him and he’s like oh I might have messed up. That was priceless. I was laughing so hard when he froze that thing because I knew that somebody was eventually going to catch that, me looking at him.»
Speed has asked for a rematch numerous times but Lyles has so far rejected those requests.
Noah Lyles’ fiancé Junelle Bromfield is already making her feelings known to him on what she is not prepared to do once the two decide to tie the knot following their engagement.
