Letsile Tebogo confirmed for Diamond League Meeting opener in Xiamen

Reigning 200m champion Letsile Tebogo surely means business this season.

Letsile Tebogo has been announced as a headliner for the Meeting opener in Xiamen scheduled for April 26.

The announcement comes days after he was confirmed for the 400m at the Maurie Plant Meet, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, in Melbourne on March 29

Letsile Tebogo reflected on his career's turning point, winning his first global gold in Nairobi.

He has yet to confirm the event he will be competing in but after the 400m in Melbourne, the Motswana sprint king might be looking to drop down to a shorter distance.

After an exciting 2024 season, hopes to continue the winning streak and this time around, walk away with the Diamond trophy at the end of the circuit in Zurich.

He missed out on the honour last year after finishing second behind Kenny Bednarek at the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels but as he starts his campaign on time this year, things might be different.

At the Paris 2024 , Tebogo made history as the first African to win a gold medal in the 200m before anchoring Botswana’s 4x400m relay team to a silver medal behind Team USA.

He later went on to win a series of races including Lausanne, Silesia, Rome and Zurich before his second-place finish in Brussels. Now starting on a clean slate, Letsile Tebogo hopes to continue his winning ways and do even better.

Another headliner of the event is Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh whose main goal is to have a great start to her season after an astonishing 2024 season.

The three-time world champion insists that Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce still have plenty more to offer the world.

She is the reigning Diamond League champion in the high jump and has been very consistent, taking the title in the past three years.

The youngster broke the high jump with a 2.10m jump at the meeting in Paris last year and she will be hoping to continue making waves and obliterating records this year.

For Tebogo and Mahuchikh, the main focus will be to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final, scheduled for Zurich on August 27 and 28, 2025.
