Former world half marathon record holder has shifted focus to marathon
Kandie, known for setting ambitious goals, believes he has the ability to lower that time despite not even being on the list of the top 10 fastest marathoners in the world.
The late Kiptum’s world record stands at 2:00:35 and was set at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. Kiptum shattered the previous world record time of 2:01:09 and was set by Eliud Kipchoge at the 2022
Donovan Bailey hailed Letsile Tebogo, Ferdinand Omanyala, and Akani Simbine as the future of sprinting.
On his part, personal best time over the full marathon is 2:06:46. He clocked that time at the 2024 Berlin Marathon after finishing 13th. He is slowly preparing to attack the world record in the streets of Valencia at the end of the season.
Kandie selected Valencia since he has enjoyed great runs on the course. He even set a new world record in the half marathon in 2020 when he clocked 57:32 to win the race.
However, Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo lowered that time, clocking 57:31 in 2021. Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha further lowered the time, clocking 57:30 to win the race at the Valencia Half Marathon last year.
Kandie believes that his mastery of the course in Valencia will help him manoeuvre the races since he holds he won the half marathon races in 2022 (58:10) and 2023 (57:40). While the Valencia Marathon has yet to produce a world record, it boasts a reputation for blistering times.
“I want to attempt the marathon world record in Valencia, which is the final major race of the year. Going for the world record means I have to commit to extra mileage and train more intensely,” Kandie said as per The Star.
Kandie has changed his base from Iten to Ngong, and he believes that it is a great step as he eyes his great career milestone. He will first test himself at the Seoul Marathon on March 16.
Letsile Tebogo reflected on his career's turning point, winning his first global gold in Nairobi.
“I have shifted to Ngong for the last three months and it’s terrain is much different from that of Iten. Ngong is where I will get enough stamina and strength that is vital for the road races,” he said.
“My target is the Seoul Marathon which will be my first Marathon of the year. I intend to use it as a build up for more explosive results this year.”
Kandie started his 2025 season with a dominant victory at the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Championships. He has fully transitioned to road racing and he will only make appearances on the track for his employer.
World and Olympics champion Noah Lyles is considered the man to beat in 100m this season but pundits are predicting an intense rivalry between him and Jamaican Kishane Thompson.
