Two-time Olympic triathlon gold medalist has retired from competing in the sport.
The star won the men’s title at his home games of London 2012, and defended the crown at , becoming the only athlete to win two individual golds.
He posted on social media on November 21 on why he decided to call time on his illustrious career
«It’s time to close the chapter…This marks my transition from professional triathlon, a moment approached with both dread and excitement in equal measure,» he said.
Decorated tennis legend Rafael Nadal expressed satisfaction with going full circle and ending his illustrious career at the Davis Cup, the same event where he suffered his first defeat.
«In the coming months, I’ll share more about my career and the incredible individuals who have been part of my journey, along with the new and exciting challenges and projects I’m eager to tackle.
«I am deeply grateful to each and every one of you for your contributions, no matter how small you may believe they are. Your support means the world to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,» he added.
A world champion in 2009 and 2011, the 36-year-old is the only triathlete ever to be crowned junior world champion, U23 world champion, European champion and Olympic champion.
