American heptathlete has opened up on the nasty injury she suffered that almost shuttered her dream of participating in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Hall suffered a knee injury in January this year while training and subsequently underwent surgery, making her unable to build off her previous season’s momentum. Although her recovery had begun by February with the optimism of still finding a way to win gold in , her next five months were rarely smooth however.

Anna Hall shares an update on her training, recovering after narrowly missing a podium finish at the Paris Olympics.

«It was very painful emotionally and physically,” Hall said, according to «I was in pain a lot of days at practice trying things that I didn’t want to do, but doctors said, ‘If you want to push, this is what we’re doing.’ Emotionally, that’s super, super humbling.»

The Colorado native added: «The first few days trying to high jump again, I couldn’t do a single-leg hop and I’m like, how am I supposed to jump 1.85m in six weeks? It was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done.» The 23-year-old is the North American indoor record holder for the pentathlon.

Former British Heptathlete Denise Lewis was determined to win gold at the 2000 Olympics despite suffering an achilles injury before the games.

In the heptathlon all-time rankings only (7007), Nafissatou Thiam (7013), Carolina Kluft (7032) and Joyner-Kersee (7291) rank higher than Hall’s personal best score of 6988, which she set at Götzis in 2023.

Competing in the combined events requires a certain tolerance for pain. Hall jumped a season’s best of 1.89m in the high jump, her favourite event, in Paris, a result she called “the most special thing” of her competition given the difficulty she endured to regain her form following surgery.

She is the only woman to break 6700 points in the heptathlon and run under 55 seconds in the 400m hurdles. Hall also has a 50.82 s personal best in the 400m.
