Africa’s fastest man is embracing a different strategy this season aimed at not only winning races but also enjoying running.
Omanyala says he has been too focused on the results to the extent he is not having so much fun in running itself and wants to first enjoy his races before looking at how he performs.
The 29-year-old at the ASA Grand Prix in Pretoria, South Africa on Wednesday and as he looks at the areas of improvements, he wants to ensure he has fun when running.

“I am getting into this season with just one goal; to enjoy athletics. I realised that I was taken away from it too much and I had to put so much in my head in terms of races and targets but that is not what I am going with this season,” Omanyala told

“I just want to appreciate every moment that I am on the track and walk to the starting blocks. I just want to feel happy. I want to enjoy runs just like I used to do during my rookie years. I don’t want to focus on what’s coming and what medals I want to get.”
Omanyala was slightly edged out by South African teen sensation Karabo Letebele on Wednesday, the 18-year-old winning the race in 10.19 seconds, a personal best, just ahead of countryman Emile Erasmus, who also had 10.19, as the Commonwealth champion finished third in 10.22 seconds ahead Kenyan compatriot Mark Otieno, who managed fourth place in 10.39 seconds.
The Kenyan sprinter has an next week at the ASA Grand Prix 2 in Johannesburg on March 19 which will give him an indication of some of the things to work on going forward.
