Freweyni Hailu has reacted to breaking Hellen Obiri’s 3000m meeting record at the Czech Indoor Gala, the fourth World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Ostrava on Tuesday.

Obiri’s meeting record for the women’s 3000m indoor stood at 8:38.81 and the Ethiopian youngster lowered it to 8:24.17, winning the race against very strong opponents.

The explained that she went into the race with very high expectations, revealing that her main goal was to improve her personal best time.

Hellen Obiri will be eyeing a hat-trick at the 2025 Boston Marathon but has already identified three opponents who might give her a run for her money.

She further noted that all her preparations were done in Ethiopia and everything she did was helpful in ensuring she attained the great milestone.

“Everything has been contributed to me to be in my best shape before the season. I reached a really new level in all testing runs,” she revealed in a post-race interview.

She lauded the pacemaker for a great job done and explained that it was an easy run since she did not strain at any point in the race.

Hailu now shifts her focus to making the cut to the Ethiopian team for the in Nanjing, China where she intends to break more records and build up for the outdoor season.

“I felt comfortable and easy to get my goal at this meeting. It is great that I fulfilled the expectations of organisers and was able to improve the meeting record as well and become a world leader,” she shared.

“With such a good season opening, I hope I will be able to compete for our national team for the World Indoor Championships.”

She might upgrade to a longer distance at this year’s world indoor event after winning the 1500m at the 2024 championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

Hailu did not make the cut to the and her hope this year will also be to represent her country, Ethiopia, at the World Championships scheduled for later this year in Tokyo, Japan.

She is among the rising stars for Ethiopia who will be looking to give Kenyan runners a run for their money in the distance races and she has already started by breaking Hellen Obiri’s record.
