Gor Mahia captainhas opened up about the emotional difficulty of parting ways with the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Initially, both Otieno and midfielder Ernest Wendo but the club opted to extend their contracts until the conclusion of the season.
Otieno’s short-term extension is largely influenced by the uncertainty surrounding defender Ronney Onyango’s future, while Wendo’s experience offers crucial depth in midfield.
Both Timothy Ouma and his agent Patrick Mork have explained why they snubbed overtures from the likes of Luton and Sheffield United to join Slavia Prague.
The duo are among the club’s longest-serving players, with Wendo having secured seven league titles since his arrival in 2015, while Otieno has six titles to his name since joining K’Ogalo in 2017.
Their departures would have significantly reduced the experience in the dressing room, especially considering their long-term association with the club.
Despite his captaincy, Otieno has seen limited game time at right-back, where Onyango remains the first-choice option. However, with Onyango reportedly exploring other opportunities, Gor Mahia sought to avoid a potential shortage in the squad.
Onyango had been linked with a move to Tanzanian side Singida Black Stars, but the transfer collapsed despite part of the fee having already been paid. With only six months left on his contract, indications point to his exit either this month or at the end of the season.
The FKF Premier League champions have changed their mind regarding the futures of the long-serving players whose contracts had come to an end in December.
In a recent interview with Tata Sports, Otieno expressed his gratitude to the management for extending his contract, albeit temporarily.
“I want to thank the management for extending my contract till the end of the season in order for me to continue executing my tasks as captain and bring my experience as a long-standing leader,” he stated.
Otieno remains focused on helping Gor Mahia secure another league title, with the club currently six points behind league leaders Kenya Police but holding a game in hand. Winning the championship remains a top priority for the veteran defender.
“I would love to leave Gor Mahia honourably, having won the title. I have won several titles with the club, so that would be a bonus.”
However, leaving Gor Mahia will not be easy for Otieno, who has built deep emotional ties with the club.
“It will not be good leaving the club considering it is family. It will be a blow for me to leave the club, but that is the way it is.”
Otieno’s legacy at Gor Mahia extends beyond domestic success. He was part of the Harambee Stars squad that played in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, featuring in three matches.
His career faced a major setback in August 2019 when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury while representing Kenya against Tanzania in a 2020 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier.
As the season nears its climax, Otieno remains committed to leaving his mark and ensuring Gor Mahia’s continued dominance in Kenyan football before his eventual departure.
