Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner delivered a standout performance for Bristol City in their 1-0 Championship loss to Burnley at Ashton Gate on Saturday. Despite his defensive heroics, Jaidon Anthony’s solitary goal proved decisive, handing the visitors their second consecutive win and a vital boost to their promotion push.

Vyner’s all-action display included 11 tackles and interceptions, two clearances, and a solid showing in duels. The Kenyan international won two of four aerial contests and emerged victorious in four of his seven ground duels, showcasing his defensive acumen and determination.

Burnley capitalized on their early dominance in the 23rd minute when Bournemouth loanee Jaidon Anthony netted the winner. Luca Koleosho’s skillful run down the left flank set up a chance for Josh Brownhill, whose deflected shot forced a save from City goalkeeper Max O’Leary. The rebound, however, fell perfectly for Anthony to slot home from close range.

Waweru, who Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has previously hinted at wanting to call up, has earned reward for a decent first season in the Irish top flight, signing a two-year extension to his Sligo Rovers contract.

The Clarets, boasting one of the Championship’s stingiest defenses with 10 clean sheets this season, successfully absorbed Bristol City’s pressure in the second half.

The Robins had their moments to equalize, particularly in the second half. Substitute Yu Hirakawa created an excellent chance for Max Bird shortly after coming on, but the midfielder’s heavy touch wasted the opportunity. Hirakawa himself came close, racing through a rare gap in Burnley’s defense only to be denied by England U-21 keeper James Trafford’s crucial save.

Sinclair Armstrong also had a late opportunity, heading wide from a free-kick, while Bristol City fans clamored for a penalty when the ball appeared to graze Josh Brownhill’s hand inside the box.

Despite the loss, Vyner’s performance stood out as a silver lining for Bristol City, who remain winless at home since September 21.

For Burnley, the victory marks their second consecutive win after a recent slump, boosting their promotion hopes. Their resilient defense, which has now conceded just six goals in 16 games, continues to be a cornerstone of their success.

Elsewhere in League One, Harambee Stars prospect Silko Thomas Otieno made an impact for Wigan Athletic, registering a crucial assist in their 1-0 victory over Barnsley. Theo Aasgard’s strike secured all three points for Wigan in a tightly contested affair.
